Synopsis
Don't let the quiet demeanor fool you — Hoichiro Ohma is a polite boyfriend and totally unremarkable office worker who looks like the most boring guy in any room, fooling everyone around him. His girlfriend Nanase has no idea. His coworkers have no idea. Nobody suspects that when someone gets away with murder, when a killer slips through the cracks of the legal system, Hoichiro shows up to handle it differently. He's the Judge of Darkness, carrying a book bound in human skin and accompanied by a deeply unsettling parrot, and he presides over a supernatural court that earthly law can't touch. The criminals who thought they were free? Not so much. This is a single OVA from 1991, so it's short and concentrated — all atmosphere, no padding. The animation has that specific late-80s to early-90s J.C.Staff grittiness that fans of the era will recognize immediately, and the tone sits somewhere between a horror anthology and a dark morality tale. It's not action-heavy; it's slow-burn and eerie, built around dread rather than jump scares. If you've seen Pet Shop of Horrors or Wicked City and liked how they handled supernatural justice with a quiet menace, this fits right alongside them. It shares that same sense of a hidden world operating just beneath ordinary life, where the truly guilty eventually face something worse than prison. Fans of Demon City Shinjuku's dark urban atmosphere will also feel at home here. It's a quick watch, but it sticks with you.
