Synopsis
The familiar premise here should not fool you. Love Mary is not your Saturday morning fare. This 2-episode OVA from Studio 1st takes the familiar setup of young women transforming to fight evil and drags it somewhere considerably darker. Mahiro Yuzuki becomes Love Mare Lapis, joined by two allies, and together they're supposed to be the ones standing between humanity and demonic forces. The problem is they run into Reviana, concubine of a fallen god, and things go sideways fast. The series leans hard into the contrast between the purity the magical girl genre usually represents and the corruption these characters face: tentacles, demonic influence, the works. It's not subtle about what it is. If you've seen Mahou Shoujo Ai or Taimanin Asagi, you already know the genre this sits in. It occupies similar territory to Bible Black in terms of tone: dark fantasy where the heroines are put through genuinely unsettling situations rather than triumphant battles. The animation quality holds up well for an adult OVA, the character designs are detailed, and the soundtrack actually does some work setting a grim atmosphere rather than just being background noise. Two episodes means it doesn't overstay its welcome. If dark magical girl content with explicit themes is something you're into, this delivers exactly what it promises: no more, no less.
