Raised in the Greek city-state of Cardia, Eumenes is a sharp young mind getting the kind of classical education that should set him up for a comfortable life. Then his adoptive father gets murdered, and everything falls apart. He ends up enslaved, fighting to survive in a world where political alliances shift like sand and the wrong word to the wrong person gets you killed. This is the story of how a nobody from Scythian origins claws his way through 4th century BC Greece and eventually becomes the right-hand man of Alexander the Great — though the series takes its time getting there, and that's the whole point. Historie is a seinen adaptation by LIDENFILMS, based on the manga by Hitoshi Iwaaki (the same mind behind Parasyte), and it leans hard into the slow-burn political and personal drama that makes historical anime actually land. The early stretch is all about Eumenes figuring out who he is when everything he thought he knew gets ripped away. There's action, but it's grounded — no flashy power systems, just steel, strategy, and desperation. If you liked Vinland Saga's exploration of identity through a brutal historical lens, or Kingdom's depiction of warfare and ambition in the ancient world, this hits a similar nerve. It's closer in tone to The Heroic Legend of Arslan's political intrigue than anything superhuman. The pacing rewards patience, and the character work is genuinely layered. Worth your time if you want history that feels lived-in rather than textbook.
