The debut episode of Hell's Paradise is a stunning introduction to a world where beauty and horror coexist in a terrifying way. Gabimaru the Hollow is immediately established as a complex protagonist; despite his claims of being emotionless, his subconscious desire to return to his wife adds a layer of humanity to his brutal nature. The interaction between him and the executioner, Yamada Asaemon Sagiri, is tense and brilliantly written, setting up a unique bond based on mutual respect and survival. MAPPA’s animation shines in the contrast between the dark, grimy execution rooms and the vibrant, unsettling imagery of the mysterious island.
