Hana (Music, 2025)
Oshimeter
Synopsis
In a sun-drenched town, a young girl sits waiting for a friend who hasn't arrived yet. That's basically the whole setup, and somehow it hits harder than you'd expect from a three-minute music video. Hana is a short animated piece made for NHK's Minna no Uta program, set to a song by Macaroni Empitsu, and it leans fully into that bittersweet space between nostalgia and loneliness. The girl reminisces about moments she's shared with this person — small, everyday stuff that meant everything — while grappling with the quiet realization that happiness doesn't stick around forever. The animation blends hand-drawn warmth with subtle digital touches, giving it this storybook quality that fits the tone perfectly. It's gentle and a little melancholy, the kind of thing that sneaks up on you emotionally even though nothing dramatic happens on screen. If you've ever watched Tsuki no Waltz or Kasuka na Hana and appreciated how those Minna no Uta shorts can pack a full emotional arc into a couple of minutes, this is right in that lane. Swallowtail Butterfly (Ai no Uta) fans will also find something to connect with here. It's one episode, barely any time commitment, and the song alone is worth hearing. Sometimes the smallest stories are the ones that linger the longest.
