Synopsis

While playing a brand new MMORPG called 'The World,' two friends collapse, and only one of them wakes up. That's the setup for .hack//Liminality, a 4-episode OVA from 2002 that takes a different angle than most game-based anime — there's no one trapped inside the game, no fantasy adventure. Everything happens in the real world, where Mai is trying to figure out why her friend Kasumi is in a coma, and whether the game itself is somehow responsible. She ends up partnering with Tokuoka, a guy who used to work at the company that made 'The World' and has his own reasons for digging into what's happening. It turns out Kasumi isn't the only one — players across the country are falling into the same mysterious comas. The whole thing has a quiet, creeping dread to it. If you liked Serial Experiments Lain or Ergo Proxy, you'll recognize that unsettling feeling of reality and technology bleeding into each other in ways that feel genuinely threatening. The investigation unfolds slowly and deliberately, which is either going to work for you or not. It also connects directly to the .hack video games released around the same time, so there's a whole multimedia layer if you want to go down that rabbit hole. Yuki Kajiura did the soundtrack, and it adds a lot to the atmosphere. Worth watching if you like mysteries that stay grounded and a little cold.
