Girl Next Door
Oshimeter
Synopsis
One rule governs Masahiko's entire life: no sex until he finds the mystery woman from his past — the one who represents his ideal, the one he can barely even remember. It's a noble, if somewhat absurd, personal vow. The problem is that everyone around him seems to have missed the memo. His boss is feeling neglected while her husband's out of town. A childhood friend with an impressive presence moves into his place uninvited. A professor, a student who's basically stalking him, and his neighbor Asuka are all circling. The universe is testing this man specifically and personally. Based on a visual novel and adapted into a 2-episode OVA by Y.O.U.C back in 2000, Tonari no Oneesan plays the whole situation for comedy as much as anything else. The appeal is less about the adult content itself and more about watching one guy get absolutely overwhelmed from every direction while trying to hold onto a half-remembered ideal. Each woman has a distinct personality and design, which keeps the rotating cast from blurring together. If you've watched something like Bible Black and wanted the tone to be lighter and more character-driven, this scratches a similar itch without the heavier atmosphere. Fans of La Blue Girl who appreciate older-era adult OVAs with actual comedic writing might also find it worth the short runtime. It's not deep, but it's self-aware enough to be entertaining on its own terms.
