Synopsis

When an alien invasion tears through their colony world, thirteen kids ages 4 to 15 get stranded on a training spaceship with no adults left to protect them. Now these children have to fly a starship and pilot mecha suits across hostile space just to get back to Earth. That's the setup for Ginga Hyouryuu Vifam, a 46-episode TV series from Sunrise that aired in 1983, and it holds up remarkably well. What makes this one stick with you is how grounded it feels. These aren't prodigies who instantly master combat — they're scared kids who argue over chores, comfort crying toddlers, and make bad decisions under pressure. It's kind of like Lord of the Flies in space, except there's genuine warmth and cooperation holding things together. The mecha designs by Kunio Okawara and Shoji Kawamori lean into hard sci-fi, with realistic thruster placements and zero-G movement that still looks great. And the fully English opening theme is oddly perfect — gives the whole thing a classic western sci-fi film vibe. If you liked Astra Lost in Space, this is essentially its spiritual predecessor with more emotional weight and a longer runway to develop its cast. Fans of Infinite Ryvius will recognize the "kids alone on a ship" premise, and anyone who grew up on early Mobile Suit Gundam will feel right at home with the tone. It's a slow burn in places, but the character work earns every quiet moment.
