Synopsis
Locked away and left to rot in prison, Ryoma Nagare stands convicted of allegedly murdering his own mentor, Dr. Saotome, with no way out. Then Dr. Saotome shows up alive, and he's brought something called the Shin Dragon that could end the world. So now Ryoma has to get out of his cell and climb back into the cockpit of Getter Robo alongside his old teammates Hayato and Musashi, none of whom exactly trust each other anymore. On top of that, alien parasites called Invaders are possessing people and warping their bodies into nightmare fuel. This is a 13-episode OVA from 1998 by Brain's Base, and it's the version of Getter Robo that actually matches the darkness of the original manga. The mecha fights are brutal, the body horror is genuinely unsettling, and the character dynamics carry real weight: betrayal, guilt, fractured loyalty. The soundtrack goes hard too, giving everything this relentless, oppressive atmosphere that doesn't let up. If you liked the psychological dread of Neon Genesis Evangelion but want something that leans harder into violent super robot action, this scratches that itch. Fans of Mazinger Z will recognize the DNA here, and honestly, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann owes a lot to the energy Getter Robo pioneered. It's not polished or subtle; it's raw, angry mecha anime with a pitch-black tone and zero interest in holding your hand. That's the appeal.

Animation quality in this episode is quite good, and the Invaders' design is also impressive. This episode is emotionally and visually quite good, but I still feel that if the ending were a bit longer, it would have been even better. Still, it's a 10/10 anime, a must-watch if you love action + mecha.

It's my 2nd time watching this because I love mecha and science experiment-themed anime. Is episode mein action scenes kaafi fast aur energetic hain. Explosions, destruction, aur mecha battles dekhne mein kaafi entertaining lagte hain. Start se end tak ek bhi moment boring feel nahi hota. Dark atmosphere, mystery, aur intense pacing story ko aur bhi engaging bana dete hain.
Story build-up episode hai. Kafi interesting story hai, action kafi kam hai compared to previous episodes, but emotional moments is episode ko kafi interesting banate hain. Overall, it's 8.5/10.
I am a Getter Robo fan so I might be just biased about this, but the ending has been very climactic to me even if it leaves you wanting for more conclusions. I won't add more spoilers, but it does have an extension to its story and a bigger picture to it in the form of the manga, or the SRW games but that's another topic. To get back to it, the ending is pretty much just somewhat of a callback to another anime called Gunbuster, which ironically is inspired by Getter Robo. I want to call this last episode as a good climax to the entire show because of how much it ramps up to 11 with the amount of craziness that the series portrays, and in a way gives Getter Robo an identity of its own that makes it stand out in comparison to its 70s Toei super robot counterparts. I've been a Getter Robo fan for almost a decade now and even still, this show has still a lot more to offer. This is a show that I would highly recommend to anyone wanting to get into mecha.
