Synopsis

In Night Town, a corner of a future Earth so stripped of resources that the city literally cuts its power at midnight every night, delivery boy Hajiki Sanada is barely scraping by. During a job, he stumbles onto a mysterious object called a Gad — and it transforms into a humanoid robot he names Lightning. Not because he asked for it, but because the thing reacted to something in him. That's the hook: Gads respond to emotion, so what you get says something about who you are. Gad Guard is a 26-episode TV series from Gonzo that pairs a gritty, lived-in sci-fi city with genuinely personal mecha storytelling. It's less about giant robot battles and more about a kid figuring out what Lightning means and what responsibility comes with it — while meeting others who've bonded with their own Techodes for very different reasons. The jazz-heavy soundtrack gives the whole thing an atmosphere closer to noir than typical mecha, which fits Night Town perfectly. If you liked The Big O's moody urban setting or RahXephon's focus on the emotional weight behind the robot suit rather than the action itself, this sits in similar territory. It's not flashy or loud. It's a quieter, character-driven take on the genre that uses its sci-fi premise to ask pretty grounded questions about connection and purpose. Worth picking up if you want mecha that actually slows down long enough to breathe.
