Synopsis
In the wind-swept city of Fuuto, Shoutarou Hidari works as a self-styled hard-boiled detective who takes that persona very seriously — fedora, dramatic monologues, the whole deal. His partner Philip is the opposite: a bookish weirdo who can access a vast mental library of all human knowledge. Together they run the Narumi Detective Agency, and together they literally fuse into a single superhero called Kamen Rider W to fight monsters. That's the setup for this 12-episode seinen TV series, and honestly it works way better than it has any right to. The case that kicks things off involves a mysterious woman named Tokime showing up at their door, connected to a string of murders tied to "Gaia Memories" — USB-like devices that turn ordinary people into grotesque creatures called Dopants. Each arc plays out like an actual detective story with clues and deductions before the transformation sequences and fights kick in. Studio KAI animated this in 2022, and the action choreography during the Kamen Rider battles is genuinely sharp. The tone sits in this sweet spot between noir detective drama and tokusatsu action — serious enough to care about the mysteries, fun enough that the superhero stuff never feels out of place. If you liked the detective vibes of Nightwalker: The Midnight Detective or the case-driven structure of Detective School Q but want something with real combat stakes and a supernatural edge, this scratches that itch. You don't need any prior Kamen Rider knowledge either — it stands on its own.
