Freedom

Synopsis
Humanity brought about its own extinction, taking Earth with it, and the survivors rebuilt on the Moon. That's the starting point for Freedom, a 7-episode OVA from Sunrise set in 2267, where a lunar colony called Eden is all that's left of the human race. Takeru is a 15-year-old who races vehicles with his friends to burn off energy in their tightly controlled dome life — think of it as the only outlet available when you've never seen an open sky. Then he stumbles onto a photograph of a girl standing on Earth beneath actual blue sky, and suddenly everything Eden's government has told its citizens starts to feel like a lie. That question — is Earth actually dead? — is what pushes the whole story forward. The vibe sits somewhere between youthful rebellion and quiet dread, with enough racing and action to keep things moving. One thing worth knowing upfront: the mechanical and character designs come from Katsuhiro Otomo, the person behind Akira, so the visual DNA is distinct and carries some real weight. The animation mixes 2D and 3D in ways that hold up well for a 2006 production. If you liked the grounded space atmosphere of Planetes or the post-apocalyptic world-building of Ergo Proxy, there's a lot here that'll feel familiar but warmer in tone. It never gets as bleak as either of those, but it doesn't talk down to you either.
