Franz Kafka's A Country Doctor
Oshimeter
Synopsis
A country doctor recounts a frantic night call to treat a young patient. He is swiftly transported by "unearthly horses" to the bedside, where the events take on a surreal quality. Preoccupied with personal grievances and distractions, the doctor struggles to connect with the patient and ultimately fails to diagnose or treat what is revealed to be a fatal wound. The villagers, who constantly demand the impossible from him, humiliate the doctor for his perceived inadequacy. He is then condemned to an endless return trip, losing everything in the process. The narrative explores themes of professional failure, the burden of expectation, and the doctor's internal conflicts.
