Dragon Ball: Mystical Adventure
Oshimeter
Synopsis
Fresh off their training under Master Roshi, Goku and Krillin head to the World Martial Arts Tournament, which happens to be hosted by Emperor Chiaotzu of the Mifan Empire. Sounds straightforward enough, except Chiaotzu is being puppeteered by Master Shen and the ruthless Mercenary Tao, who've convinced the emperor that gathering all seven Dragon Balls will bring back his missing wife. Their actual plan is way less noble — they want to overthrow him and take the empire for themselves. Meanwhile, Bulma drags Oolong, Launch, and Puar along on her own Dragon Ball hunt because, naturally, she wants to wish for a boyfriend. So you've got three separate threads — a martial arts tournament, a political coup, and a comedy road trip — all crashing into each other over the same set of magic orbs. This 1988 movie from Toei Animation remixes characters and arcs from the original Dragon Ball manga into one tight, self-contained story. Tien and Chiaotzu's relationship gets a completely different origin here, which is kind of interesting even if you already know the main series. The whole thing has that classic early Dragon Ball energy where fights and gags share equal screen time. If you're into the tournament arc vibes of Hunter x Hunter or the martial arts comedy of Ranma 1/2, this hits a similar sweet spot. It's a single movie, so there's zero commitment — just a fun alternate take on characters you probably already know.
