πŸ“– SYNOPSIS

Pollution and crime have overtaken Newport City, and the solution to both is apparently a squad of cops who drive tanks through the streets without much concern for collateral damage. That's the Tank Police, and Leona Ozaki has just transferred in as their newest β€” and first female β€” member. She fits right in by salvaging spare parts and building herself a miniature personal tank named Bonaparte, which tells you everything you need to know about her personality. Her target is Buaku, a criminal whose crew includes the Puma Sisters, two catgirl accomplices who bring a chaotic, almost cartoonish energy to the whole operation. The show is a 4-episode OVA from 1988, so it's short, punchy, and moves fast. The tone is mostly comedic β€” the Tank Police's approach to law enforcement causes nearly as much destruction as the criminals they're chasing, and the show leans into that absurdity rather than apologizing for it. The dystopian, smog-choked city backdrop gives it a slightly grimy sci-fi texture that keeps it from feeling too lightweight. If you liked Mobile Police Patlabor's mix of mecha and workplace comedy, or the scrappy energy of something like Burn Up!, this hits a similar note. It's based on a manga by Masamune Shirow, the same person behind Ghost in the Shell, though this one is considerably less serious. A low-commitment afternoon watch with enough personality to stick with you.

✨ MUST WATCH IF...

You're into late-80s cyberpunk anime with goofy, over-the-top police action
Masamune Shirow's other works like Ghost in the Shell are already on your list
A mini-tank named Bonaparte and its chaotic owner Leona sound genuinely fun to you
You want a short 4-episode commitment with quirky antagonists like the Puma Sisters

❌ SKIP IF...

You need a tight, cohesive narrative β€” this leans more gag-driven than story-driven
Hand-drawn 1988 animation from Agent 21 feeling dated will pull you out of it
Comedic takes on militarized police and environmental collapse aren't your thing
