Detective Conan Movie 20: The Darkest Nightmare
Oshimeter
Synopsis
After breaking into the Japanese police database and stealing classified files from MI6, the CIA, the BND, and the FBI, a rogue spy leads public safety officer Tooru Amuro and FBI sniper Shuichi Akai on a highway chase that ends with a bullet and a crash. The next day, Conan and the Detective Boys stumble across a woman with different-colored eyes at the Tohto Aquarium. She's injured, can't remember who she is, and something about her feels off. Conan being Conan, he tries to help her piece things together — but Vermouth is watching from the shadows, which means the Black Organization is involved, and that's when you know things are about to get serious. This is one of the Detective Conan movies where the overarching plot actually matters. You get real development around the Black Organization, Akai and Amuro share screen time with genuine tension between them, and the action sequences hit harder than most entries in the franchise. The animation from TMS Entertainment is sharp, and Katsuo Ōno's score does a lot of heavy lifting in keeping the atmosphere tight. If you liked the spy thriller angle of Detective Conan Movie 13: The Raven Chaser or the Amuro-focused intrigue of Zero the Enforcer, this one sits right alongside those. It also has a similar espionage energy to Lupin III vs. Detective Conan: The Movie, just darker. Worth your time if you care about the Black Organization arc at all.
