A wolf demon with stars in his eyes, Asa arrives in Chang'an, the beating heart of Tang Dynasty China, only to get framed for murder before the day is even over. That setup alone should tell you what kind of ride this is. To clear his name, he ends up partnered with Di Shao, a human conman who's basically the opposite of everything Asa stands for. One is idealistic and naive, the other is calculating and slippery, and watching them navigate Chang'an's underworld together is where the fun lives. The city itself feels like a character: markets, back alleys, demons passing for regular citizens, secrets underneath the prosperity. It's a world where humans and demons technically coexist, but 'technically' is doing a lot of heavy lifting there. The tone leans comedic, so this isn't grimdark fantasy despite the murder accusation at the start. If you liked the atmospheric historical world-building in Mo Dao Zu Shi or the lush supernatural folklore of Big Fish and Begatta, this hits a similar register but keeps things lighter on its feet. It's a movie, so it's a contained story: no multi-season commitment, just a single focused adventure with two mismatched characters figuring each other out against a richly detailed backdrop. Worth the watch if Tang Dynasty aesthetics plus demon politics plus a buddy comedy dynamic sounds like your thing.
