In the first season of Dark Gathering, he got roped into hunting down dangerous spirits alongside Yayoi Hōzuki, a creepy-calm little girl with her own supernatural abilities and a deeply personal reason for seeking out the dead. Now in this second season, the two head to Kyoto — a city practically layered with centuries of spiritual history — where the spirits they encounter aren't just stronger, they're the kind that have been festering for a long, long time. What makes Dark Gathering work is how it balances genuine dread with slow-burn character writing. This isn't jump-scare horror for the sake of it. The show takes its time building atmosphere, letting the psychological weight of each encounter settle in before things get ugly. And they do get ugly — the gore tag is earned. Studio OLM leans into the darkness here, and the Kyoto setting gives everything an eerie historical weight that raises the stakes. If you liked the investigative horror vibe of Ghost Hunt or the creeping unease of Another and Shiki, this fits right in that lane. It's a shounen series, but the tone stays closer to genuine horror than most battle-driven supernatural shows. If you watched season one and thought the spirit encounters were already intense, Kyoto is where things apparently stop holding back.
