Synopsis
"Cyborg 009 (1979)" is the second television anime adaptation of the manga "Cyborg 009," which Ishinomori began serializing in 1964. The manga, known for its science fiction and superhero themes, explores the lives of nine cyborgs created for warfare who ultimately rebel against their makers. The 1979 anime, produced by Toei Company and Sunrise (then known as Nippon Sunrise), was directed by Ryosuke Takahashi. It aired on TV Asahi from March 6, 1979, to March 25, 1980, comprising 50 episodes, a substantial run for the era, reflecting its popularity and narrative depth. The series' production is notable for its fidelity to Ishinomori's artwork and storylines, contrasting with the 1968 adaptation, which had a shorter 26-episode run. This version aimed to align more closely with the manga's visual and narrative elements, including character designs and color schemes. The narrative begins with nine individuals from diverse backgrounds, Joe Shimamura (Cyborg 009, Japanese), Ivan Whisky (001, Russian), Jet Link (002, American), Françoise Arnoul (003, French), Albert Heinrich (004, German), Great Britain (005, British), Chang Ko (006, Chinese), and others—being abducted by Neo-Black Ghost, an evil organization intent on using them as cyborg soldiers. This organization, distinct from the manga's Black Ghost, is central to the 1979 series' premise, where they are forcibly transformed into cyborgs with unique abilities, such as melting materials, underwater breathing, and flight. Refusing to serve as killing machines, the cyborgs, guided by Dr. Isaac Gilmore, a scientist who created them and later defects, escape and form a team to fight back. The plot follows their adventures as they battle Neo-Black Ghost and other antagonists, including mad scientists, supernatural beings, and ancient civilizations, in a quest to prevent global chaos and protect humanity. The series includes original content, with the first nine episodes loosely adapting the "Edda" chapter from the manga, involving mythological elements like cyborgs based on Norse gods, and carrying forward the "Gods vs. Devils" arc. A notable character change is Cyborg 007, traditionally depicted as a young boy named Puppchen in earlier works, now portrayed as an adult in this series, aligning with Ishinomori's later artwork and reflecting a shift in character dynamics. This adaptation choice, along with the series' focus on team unity and resistance against oppression, underscores its themes of freedom, justice, and human resilience.
