Watch Cyber City for its evolving narrative, delivering strong character studies and a unique sci-fi/fantasy blend after its gritty futuristic and action-packed start.

📖 SYNOPSIS

Serving centuries behind bars with no end in sight, three convicts get offered a deal: work as cops in a futuristic Tokyo, and every mission shaves a few years off their time. The catch? They're each wearing explosive collars that detonate if they step out of line or blow a deadline. Welcome to Cyber City Oedo 808, a 3-episode OVA from 1990 by Madhouse that packs more cyberpunk style into its short runtime than most full series manage. Sengoku is the hothead doing 375 years for armed robbery, Gogul is a master hacker pulling 310, and Benten — an androgynous pretty boy with 295 years — rounds out the trio. Their boss, Hasegawa, keeps his finger on the detonator and his patience thin. Each episode is essentially a standalone case — part action, part mystery — where one of the three takes the lead. The cyberpunk world-building is dense and lived-in, all neon-soaked cityscapes and grimy tech. If you're into Ghost in the Shell or Bubblegum Crisis, this sits comfortably in that same 80s-90s cyberpunk lineage but with a grittier, more criminal edge. Worth noting: the British dub swaps out the original score for a rock-heavy soundtrack that honestly slaps and gives the whole thing a completely different energy. It's only three episodes, so the time commitment is nothing. If Akira made you want more dark, stylish sci-fi from that era, this is a solid next pick.

✨ MUST WATCH IF...

You love early '90s cyberpunk OVAs — Madhouse's neon-soaked visuals are peak aesthetic here
Three standalone episodes each spotlighting a different convict's mission and backstory appeals to you
You want raw action with real stakes — explosive collars keep tension high throughout every mission
The synth-heavy electronic soundtrack is exactly the kind of cyberpunk atmosphere you're after

❌ SKIP IF...

You haven't finished Season 807 — character dynamics and world context won't land properly
You need a continuous overarching plot — each episode is essentially its own self-contained story
Mature violence and morally grey protagonists who are actual criminals aren't your thing
