Corpse Party: Tortured Souls was an anime released in 2013 straight to dvd and bluray after receiving a special screening for members of the staff and cast. The anime is the same director of its prequel, that being Akira Iwanagawa. It was also animated by asread, who have animated anime such as Future Diary, Ga-Rei: Zero, and Big Order. It’s also notable that most of the actors from the games come back for the anime, which I find pretty cool.

To start, I enjoy the anime’s atmosphere and animation. The animation isn’t anything fantastic but I enjoy the artstyle and it feels faithful to the games. The atmosphere also feels unique, even if it doesn’t help with most of the scares. The acting is just as good as the game too, which I expected since I remember that from the last time I saw the anime. The ending was also pretty good. I liked how it was hinted on and the final shot, plus the small little epilogue with Naomi and her mother, was really nice and made me wish the anime was more fleshed out like that.

It also varies off from the game a lot. In the game, only Yui, Sakutaro, Seiko, and Mayu out of the ‘main’ characters die. In the anime, everyone does except Ayumi and Naomi, which makes this anime more like a slasher than a creepy time-loop ghost story. The characters are also blander compared to the game.

|In the game she is sympathetic but not fleshed out the best. In the anime she is similar but only there for 10 or so minutes from the 4 episode anime. The first episode she is with the main cast, then the second she witnesses Mayu’s death, which in itself is interesting since the game has Yoshiki and Ayumi witness this, and the fourth episode she meets with Ayumu and then dies in a very anti climactic fashion.

The anime overall isn’t the best but not the worst. It suffers from pacing issues and a rushed story, along with weird fetishization of minors, which the game franchise suffers from too, which is pretty gross. I recommend it since it’s a short watch but I would recommend the game, which I any review someday, along with the live action adaptations.

{Pros}

- Acting is excellent

- The animation looks good and detailed for the more gorier parts

- I enjoyed the atmosphere

- The ending I really enjoyed, as it was hinted upon

{Cons}

- The pacing is mostly all over the place

- A lot of the characters are under developed and not given much to do

- I don’t like the fetishization of certain characters

- A lot of the scares are a bit corny and not too scary, minus a few scenes

- A lot of stuff from the game’s story is lost here, changed for the anime, or rushed
