Cool Devices
Oshimeter
Synopsis
The retro 90s aesthetic might suggest otherwise, but Cool Devices is an 11-episode anthology OVA that goes places most anime won't touch, and it doesn't apologize for any of it. Each episode is its own self-contained story with different characters, different setups, and different uncomfortable territory. The first episode follows Ai, a curious girl who stumbles into an underground S&M club and gets pulled into a world she didn't expect to want. The second puts you in a secluded mansion with a reclusive brother who watches secret parties through surveillance cameras while wrestling with desires he probably shouldn't have. From there, the series keeps shifting — new faces, new situations, always circling back to manipulation, desire, and the psychological weight of both. It's an adult anthology, which means the stories are actually trying to be stories, not just setup for the explicit content. The production quality holds up better than a lot of its era, and the variety in tone and premise keeps things from feeling repetitive. If you've watched something like Kite or Mezzo Forte and wanted more narrative ambiguity around mature content, this scratches a similar itch. It's closer in spirit to La Blue Girl's unapologetic approach, but with more psychological grounding. Not something to throw on casually — this is deliberate viewing for people who know what they're getting into.
