Colosseum no Senki: Another Story

i came for the fantasy action but stayed for the weirdly high quality background art during the tavern sequence and that cliffhanger with the princess was a total surprise

it is easy to tell this was based on an erotic novel by how much time they spent on the dialogue scenes in the dungeon and the music was surprisingly dramatic for what it was

the pacing felt a bit rushed through the intro and you barely get to know the hero before he is tossed into the pit but at least the action scenes have some weight to them

i was not ready for how detailed the character designs were especially for the lead girl and the lighting in that arena scene was actually pretty moody for this kind of show

those gladiators looked so much beefier than the light novel illustrations and the way that one dude just got his head crushed was genuinely brutal

That transition from the fight to the dungeon was pretty jarring and the music just cut off out of nowhere which totally killed the mood for a second

The pacing felt a bit rushed towards the end of the episode and it felt like they skipped a few chapters of the novel to get to the action

You can tell they spent a lot of the budget on the character movements in the arena and the way they moved in the sword fights felt much better than typical stuff

I went into this expecting the usual low effort animation from these types of series but the art is actually solid for an opening episode, the coliseum atmosphere feels gritty and the voice acting for the lead heroine makes her situation feel genuine, it definitely leans into the fantasy elements more than I anticipated and the cliffhanger with the commander was a nice touch

I liked the way the lighting looked during the nighttime segments and the soundtrack during the final confrontation made the atmosphere feel much heavier

The story is pretty standard for a Wakatsuki Hikaru adaptation, but the way they set up the arena politics stands out more than the actual scenes

I spent most of the episode wondering if there would be more story but the fantasy setting is actually cool and the way the armor looks is decent enough

Watching the main girl struggle against those gladiators felt way more intense than expected for a first episode and the art held up throughout the whole thing

I really felt for the gladiator when he pulled out that hidden blade and the blood splatter looked gnarly

combat animation felt way too stiff and the plot about the captive girl was just generic even for fantasy

that colosseum crowd sounded really loud and the animation for the monster was surprisingly detailed, plus the ending left me wanting more.

you can tell this is from a novel because there is a lot of talking before the action starts and the pacing felt slow

I thought the art style during the arena fight was cool and the way the shadows looked in the cell worked well
