Synopsis
To survive the dullness of his all-boys high school, Jouji Ema has developed a weird little coping mechanism — he counts every cute thing he sees throughout the day. Problem is, cute things are in short supply when you're surrounded by rowdy teenage guys. Enter Miyoshi Hayashi, the one classmate who keeps catching Ema's eye. After some kind of mishap at the sports festival, Hayashi latches onto Ema and starts straight-up asking him, "Do you think I'm cute?" with zero self-consciousness. Ema doesn't really know what to do with that energy, but he can't look away either. This is a short one — five episodes from Doga Kobo, adapted from a manga — and it leans into that anthology-style format where you get glimpses into different students' lives and the quiet, sometimes awkward ways they connect with each other. The vibe is youthful and wholesome without being saccharine. It's more interested in small character moments and personal growth than big dramatic arcs, which honestly makes it a nice palate cleanser between heavier shows. If you liked the chaotic slice-of-life energy of Daily Lives of High School Boys but want something a bit more introspective, or if the oddball character dynamics in something like Princess Princess were your thing, this fits that niche. It's a low-commitment watch that captures the weird, earnest texture of adolescent friendships in a way that feels genuine rather than manufactured.
