Synopsis
At 37 years old, Douglas Ford is basically ancient in anime terms. He used to be a legendary enhancement spellcaster — the guy who buffed the entire hero party. But a mysterious condition now drains his health every time he casts magic, so the hero party kicks him out and the guild straight-up revokes his adventurer's license. Rough deal. Now he's just wandering around with no purpose, until he stumbles across Rabi, a young girl trapped in a wolf-demon form by a curse. Douglas manages to break the curse, and from there he basically adopts her as his daughter. The rest of the story follows the two of them trying to build a quiet life together, except trouble keeps finding them because, well, fantasy world. What makes this one work is the dynamic between Douglas and Rabi. There's a genuine warmth to their relationship that gives the action scenes actual stakes. The magic system is interesting too — Douglas has to weigh every spell against his own health, so fights have this layer of tension where raw power isn't the answer. It's got that cozy found-family energy similar to If It's for My Daughter, I'd Even Defeat a Demon Lord, but with more action. If you liked the protective-parent vibe from The Rising of the Shield Hero or the laid-back fantasy feel of By the Grace of the Gods, this is worth checking out. Based on a light novel, TV series format.
