Synopsis

When a sacred royal sword from Korea's Chosun Dynasty gets stolen by a grave robber, it ends up in the hands of Japanese criminal organizations. That's the setup for Hail, a young Korean man who decides to go get it back himself — no government, no army, just him against the Yakuza and the Mafia. When the Yakuza boss holding the sword gets killed by the Mafia and the sword changes hands again, Hail's mission expands from Japan all the way to New York. His girlfriend Chaerin is already stateside for a car show, which puts her right in the middle of things whether she wants to be or not. The blend here is unusual — there's a historical Korean framing wrapped around a very modern, globetrotting crime action story, and the mature content is woven throughout rather than bolted on. It has the same kind of gritty, adults-only action energy you might associate with certain 90s OVAs from that era. If you've watched things like Blue Seed and appreciated the darker, more grounded side of 90s action anime, this operates in a similar headspace. It's a 1994 movie, so it's compact — one sitting, no filler, just a straightforward story about a man chasing stolen heritage across two countries. The Korean historical angle makes it stand out from the usual fare, and the criminal underworld framing keeps the stakes grounded in something concrete rather than abstract world-ending threats.
