Synopsis
While exploring his school's abandoned basement, high school kid Taki Minase stumbles onto something he really shouldn't have: a blood-stained grimoire called the Black Bible, left behind from a violent occult incident twelve years ago. That discovery kicks off a slow-burn horror story set almost entirely within the walls of what looks like an ordinary academy, where a hidden coven is running rituals in the dark and the school doctor, Rika Shiraki, is far more dangerous than she appears. The story pulls in his childhood friend Reika Kitami and a mysterious classmate named Kurumi Imari, weaving a web of psychological manipulation and factional power struggles that genuinely keeps you guessing about who's pulling whose strings. Don't go in expecting a simple premise: there's actual world-building here, an oppressive gothic atmosphere, and a moody early 2000s art style that fits the tone. If you've seen Urotsukidouji: Legend of the Overfiend and appreciated how it blended horror with adult content, Bible Black scratches a similar itch with a more grounded, school-based mystery framing. Fans of Euphoria who stuck around for the psychological tension will find familiar ground here. It's a 6-episode OVA from Studio Jam, based on a visual novel, and it earns its reputation as one of the more narratively coherent entries in its genre, which, given the genre, is saying something.

raijin_rider★★★☆☆EP 1The plot about the underground club and the curses is actually interesting enough to be its own horror anime and the physics on some of the character models are surprisingly smooth
luka_lyrical★★★☆☆EP 1That scene where Taki finds the Black Bible in the school basement was actually kind of intense and I liked how the music built up the dread before things got weird
ritsuko_akagi_183★★★★☆EP 1Finding that book was creepy, but the actual supernatural horror elements are surprisingly solid for a series that is mostly known for being a classic gateway into this specific genre
binbogami_buster_29★★★☆☆EP 1The animation on the hair and the character movements looks way better than most modern shows and the dark atmosphere in that dusty basement really sets a creepy mood for the occult stuff
vexen_457★★★★☆EP 1I can't stop laughing at the English dub because the voices sound like they are from a completely different show and it makes the ritual scene in the basement feel like a total comedy sketch
yiga_clan★★★★☆EP 1the dark history of the club and the way that twelve year old mystery felt in the basement made it obvious that book was going to ruin everything
mela★★★★☆EP 1it is wild how fast the situation escalated from a simple curiosity to a literal nightmare once the magic started spreading through the class
mamoru_chiba★★★★☆EP 1everything changed the second that book was opened and the atmosphere in that school shifted from normal to completely insane
korok★★★★☆EP 1I was not prepared for how much the supernatural stuff would carry the episode and it makes the school feel so dangerous, watching Taki find the Black Bible in that decrepit basement was a huge turning point and seeing the magic actually take hold of people was genuinely unsettling because I felt like he lost control immediately after trying it once
fireblight_ganon★★★★☆EP 1that book looks absolutely cursed and the music playing while he was exploring the dusty basement gave me actual chills
isidro_the_thief★★★★☆EP 1my stomach dropped when the magic started taking over because you can tell Taki has no idea what he just unleashed on his friends
jean_jester_110★★★☆☆EP 1that basement scene was actually so creepy and finding that book feels like a terrible mistake for everyone involved
grey_ghost_143★★★☆☆EP 1seeing him test out the spells and realize they actually worked was definitely the point where things got out of hand
nunnally_lamperouge_174★★★☆☆EP 1I was actually shocked by how dark the atmosphere got once he opened the book, it felt way more like a horror movie than I expected
rauru★★★★☆EP 1learning about the old club history while he was down in that basement made the whole atmosphere feel way more oppressive
minish_289★★★☆☆EP 1That first ritual scene with the candles had some surprisingly good animation for an old show and the atmosphere was actually dark
kosenjo_no_obake★★★★☆EP 1I really do not know how to feel after finishing this, because the supernatural horror vibes in that basement were actually pretty decent. It sucks that the story just uses the book as an excuse for Taki to be a total monster to Kurumi and everyone else though. The occult stuff had potential, but he is easily one of the worst main characters ever.
