Waking up with no memory of himself, he's told he's the legendary Devil of Darkness — an entity powerful enough to unmake the entire universe. Sounds terrifying, except he seems perfectly nice, and immediately starts getting approached by a parade of attractive women who want to... spend time with him. That's basically the setup for Be-yond, a 2-episode OVA from 1998 based on an adult visual novel by ELF. The tone here is light. Think galaxy-hopping comedy with a lead character who's genuinely confused about his own mythology, a devoted servant named Len who takes her job very seriously, and a sci-fi backdrop that never takes itself too seriously. There's action, there's humor, and yes, being a hentai title, there are adult scenes — so go in knowing what you're signing up for. What makes it worth a look if this is your kind of thing is the distinctly 90s art style and the visual novel DNA showing through in how scenes unfold. It has that branching-narrative feel, even compressed into two episodes. If you enjoyed the irreverent tone of something like YU-NO: A Girl Who Chants Love at the Bound of This World or the adult game adaptations from that era, this sits comfortably in that same space. Short runtime, absurd premise, and a surprisingly warm main character who just happens to be capable of molecular disintegration. Worth an afternoon if retro adult anime is your thing.
