Belle

Suzu Naito hasn't been able to sing since her mother died. Every time she tries, her voice just breaks. She's 17, living in a quiet rural town, and basically fading into the background of her own life. Then she finds 'U,' a massive virtual world with five billion users, and creates an avatar called Belle, a singer who becomes an overnight sensation. The thing is, Belle can do what Suzu can't. Behind the avatar, the music just flows out of her, and suddenly millions of people are listening. But during one of her concerts, a mysterious figure called The Dragon crashes in, and instead of running like everyone else, Belle is drawn to him. Who is he, and why is he so angry? That question pulls Suzu into something much bigger than internet fame. This is basically a modern Beauty and the Beast retelling set inside a digital world, and it's from Mamoru Hosoda at Studio Chizu, the same director behind Summer Wars, which explored similar ideas about online worlds but with a very different story. The animation switches between soft watercolor countryside scenes and dazzling CG virtual concerts, and singer Kaho Nakamura voices Belle with a soundtrack that genuinely hits. If you liked the emotional weight of Your Name or the digital-world aesthetics of Paprika, this one sits comfortably in that space. It's a movie about grief, identity, and finding your voice again, literally.
