Synopsis

For a long time now, Jinta Yadomi hasn't left his house. He dropped out of school, plays video games all day, and has basically checked out of life. Then one summer day, his dead childhood friend Menma shows up as a ghost and asks him to grant a wish she can't even remember. That's the setup for this 11-episode TV series, and honestly, it wrecked me. Jinta can't do this alone, so he has to track down and reconnect with their old friend group — five kids who used to be inseparable before Menma's death tore them apart. The thing is, every single one of them is carrying guilt, jealousy, or grief they never dealt with, and dragging all of that into the open is messy and painful in ways that feel uncomfortably real. A-1 Pictures nails the quiet rural town setting, and the soundtrack by REMEDIOS does a lot of heavy lifting emotionally — that ending theme will get stuck in your heart, not just your head. What makes Anohana work is that it's not really about the ghost. It's about people who stopped growing because they couldn't face losing someone, and what it takes to finally let go. If you liked Clannad: After Story or Your Lie in April, this hits similar emotional territory but tells a complete story in just 11 episodes. Bring tissues. Not exaggerating — the final episode is a thing that happens to you.
