📖 SYNOPSIS
With the intensity of a mecha pilot defending humanity, Anizawa Meito runs his anime merchandise shop. This one-episode OVA from 2002 takes the mundane reality of working retail — stocking shelves, dealing with customers, protecting your store from competitors — and cranks it up to absurd, life-or-death battle anime levels. Meito inherited the shop from the dying former manager, and he will not let that legacy down, even if the stakes are literally just selling figurines and manga volumes.
The whole thing is directed by Hideaki Anno and animated by Gainax, which means the team behind Evangelion put their actual talent into making a glorified commercial for the Animate retail chain. And honestly, that's what makes it work. The animation quality and dramatic direction are way higher than they have any right to be for a parody ad about an otaku store. Every shelf restock feels like a final showdown, every customer interaction plays out like a dramatic confrontation.
It's only one episode, so the time commitment is basically nothing. If you liked the self-aware otaku energy of Otaku no Video or the ridiculous hot-blooded escalation of Gurren Lagann, this is in that same neighborhood — just compressed into a short, sharp burst of retail-themed absurdity. Think of it as Abenobashi Magical Shopping Arcade's even more unhinged cousin who actually works at the mall.
