What happens when ordinary mortals wander into a mystical realm called Penglai Wonderland and decide the smartest move is to pretend they're immortals is exactly as chaotic as it sounds. That's the setup, and it goes about as chaotically as you'd expect. Led by the smooth-talking Lü Dongbin and the more grounded Zhongli Quan, the crew includes a wildly mismatched group: He Xiangu, Tieguai Li, Han Xiangzi, Cao Guojiu, Lan Caihe, and Zhang Guolao, each with their own reasons for being there and their own ways of nearly derailing everything. Together they're running what amounts to an elaborate con in a world full of actual supernatural forces, which is the kind of plan that requires either genius or complete recklessness. Probably both. The whole thing is rooted in Chinese mythology, specifically the Eight Immortals, so there's genuine cultural texture underneath the heist comedy. It's not just window dressing. the characters and their dynamics pull directly from those legends, which gives the story a grounded sense of identity even when things get absurd. If you enjoyed the ensemble chaos of Baccano! or the mythological richness of Mo Dao Zu Shi, this sits somewhere between those two in tone. It's lighter than the latter and more culturally specific than the former. As a movie, it commits fully to the premise without overstaying its welcome. Worth watching if you're into ensemble casts where everyone has a distinct personality and nobody fully has their act together.
