Years after the Anshi Rebellion, the Tang dynasty faces a new threat: the Tibetan army. Military commander Gao Shi suffers a crushing defeat in the southwest, leaving Chang'an vulnerable. Trapped within the besieged city, Gao Shi finds himself reflecting on his past. He recounts his experiences with the renowned poet Li Bai to the eunuch overseeing the military. As the walls of Chang'an face the imminent danger of invasion, Gao Shi's memories of his friendship with Li Bai offer a glimpse into a time before the current crisis. The narrative focuses on the relationship between these two figures and the looming threat to the Tang dynasty.
