Ambivalent Garden
Oshimeter
Synopsis
Two identical souls emerge from matching lotus flowers in an idyllic grove, mirror images and opposites at the same time. A gaunt figure greets them with freshly picked fruit, and eating it changes things in ways the movie keeps symbolic rather than spelled out. That is the setup for Ninifuni no Niwa (Ambivalent Garden), a four-minute movie with no dialogue, made as a graduation project. It is less a plot than a hushed, dreamlike allegory about duality, desire, and separation, told through gesture, color, and visual rhythm. The Art Nouveau and Symbolism influence gives the garden and the mirrored protagonists an ornate, painterly feel, so even the quiet moments have weight. If you liked Angel's Egg for its hushed symbolism, Cat Soup for its dream logic, or Belladonna of Sadness for its painterly unease, this short sits in that same strange garden. It is compact, melancholic, and more interested in images than answers, which is exactly why it lingers.
